This recently witnessed Nepal tragedy drifts back in time, bringing to mind past plane crash misfortunes in the country. This country has always been in the news for its poor air safety standards.
It is no news that Nepal boasts eight of the world's tallest mountain peaks. An array of airlines fly to small airports in remote hills. However, mountains, surrounding the main airport, have uncertain airflow, and landing or takeoff is not child's play, even for experienced pilots.
Some experts have alleged that the government failed to properly regulate the aviation industry, apart from geographical factors.
According to reports released by Hindustan Times, at least one flight disaster is likely to occur in Nepal on an annual basis.
In the year 2000, there was a helicopter crash that took away the lives of nearly 360 people, and then Nepal's PM (Prime Minister) K.P. Sharma Oli requested people to "be patient" in one of his social media posts.
An aircraft of Tara Air (a subsidiary of Yeti Airlines) crashed in a mountainous region in 2022, heading towards Jomson from Pokhara. In this incident, a total of 22 passengers were killed, and there was another incident occurred in 2016 where 23 passengers passed away.
There was another tragedy, the Kathmandu Plane Crash, which occurred in the Himalayan region (Nepal), taking away many lives in January 2023, and this was recorded as the 13th such incident in Nepal in the past 12 years.
Enhancing the training programs for pilots operating flights in the Himalayan region is essential to reducing the number of plane crash incidents in Nepal.
Flights must land or take off based on weather forecasts, and pilots must be prepared for emergency landings, etc.
Based on certain allegations by experts, the Government machinery also fails to regulate the Nepal civil sector; thus, it must formulate the relevant policies.
